Rowena Romero, is a past District 42 International Speech Contest winner who made it to the Toastmasters International finals in 2005. She is currently a member of Westenders Toastmasters located in downtown Calgary.
She made her first theatrical debut as Bloody Mary in the Front Row Centre (FRC) production of Rogers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific, a musical from June 10 – 25, 2016 at Beddington Heights Community Arts Centre in Calgary.
A testament to the value of the Toastmasters experience! Rowena relied heavily on her Toastmasters experience to successfully move through the audition process and land the part in the musical. She had no theatre experience, and had to draw upon the skills gained through her Toastmasters journey (i.e., table topics participation, gesturing and vocal variety emphasis). When she landed the role in the FRC theatre production, her ability to memorize lines, move comfortably on stage, vocally project, gesture, adhere to timing and conquer nerves were essential to her successful performance – all skills and experiences gained in Toastmasters.
Rowena attributes her ability to land a part in the musical and deliver a shining performance to her Toastmasters experience, “Without Toastmasters, I strongly feel that I would not have been able to get the part.”
Her stellar performance landed her a Calgary Community Theatre Awards nomination for “Outstanding Performance by a Supporting Actress in a Musical” for her role as Bloody Mary in South Pacific.
Rowena is currently working on a presentation called “Taking Toastmasters to the Theatre”. She hopes to develop the presentation into a full-fledged Education Session.
