Remembrance At Fall Conference
During our District 42 Fall Conference, Nov 10-12, 2017 in Medicine Hat, we have an opportunity to get together as a community of Toastmasters. To honour the weekend of remembrance together, we will be holding two special events on Saturday, November 11, 2017.
Every year on November 11, we pause in a silent moment of remembrance for the men and women who have served, and continue to serve our country during times of war, conflict and peace. We honour those who fought for Canada in the First World War (1914-1918), the Second World War (1939-1945), and the Korean War (1950-1953), as well as those who have served since then. More than 2.3 million Canadians have served our country in this way, and more than 118,000 have died. They gave their lives and their futures so that we may live in peace.
At the 11th Hour of the 11th Day of the 11th Month during our Fall Conference we will pause to remember and honour the men and women who have served and who continue to serve. We will take part of our weekend together to pause and remember all those men and women. Past District Governor Mona Cooley will be our Toastmaster and MC for our service which will include a wreath presentation.
Military Mess Dinner – Saturday Evening
This year, in place of the District Director’s Ball, we will be having a District Director’s Military Mess Dinner. Messes are integral to military life and serve a vital role in fostering morale and building esprit de corps among personnel.
A Mess Dinner is a formal military dinner held on special occasions, and it is a central event in the life of the Mess; it is here that members of a unit and their guests meet for fellowship and hospitality. It is important that those entering the Mess or enjoying its hospitality should know and comply with its traditions and customs, which centre on courtesy and respect.
There are many traditions that can happen at military mess dinner. Our mess dinner will be unique as we will be practicing our normal Toastmasters Traditions of presenting the “Of the Year” Awards and recognizing our fellow members.
There will be a few things that will be done differently, for example we will sit in the form of a Big E, we will have a table for the Fallen, and will have some extra toasts to show our thanks to the traditions of those who serve and have served.
We look forward to seeing you all at our District 42 Fall Conference in Medicine Hat, November 10-12, 2017.
