Public Mandarin Speech Contest
Draws Interest with Toastmasters
On February 22, 2026, there was an inspiring example of community engagement through a public Mandarin Bilingual Speech Event organized by the SAME Toastmasters Club. Timed beautifully during the Lunar New Year season, the event created a vibrant space where culture, communication, and leadership came together.
Although registration was capped at 50 due to room limitations, an estimated 55 attendees arrived. More than 50 people filled the room, and several stood in the hallway just to observe the contest. Of the attendees, 37 were not Toastmasters members — a remarkable turnout that demonstrated strong community interest. Approximately 15 guests expressed interest in joining or visiting the club, and one attendee made the decision on the spot to join the POB Toastmasters Club.
The contest also showcased collaboration across clubs, with members from Centennial Toastmasters Club and Engineering and Geoscience Toastmasters Club participating in the competition. This cross-club involvement reflected the unity and shared purpose within District 42.
Leadership for the event was spearheaded by Bobby Bai, President of SAME. Under his guidance, the entire club officer team worked cohesively to plan and execute a polished and welcoming event. Beyond the contest itself, SAME has built strong momentum through consistent social engagement, organizing New Year celebrations, BBQ gatherings, potlucks, karaoke nights, and additional events currently in planning. These activities foster belonging, strengthen rapport among members, and provide practical leadership opportunities as many are completed as Pathways projects.
The success of the Mandarin Bilingual Speech Contest highlights how creative, culturally relevant programming can attract guests and energize membership growth. It was a timely and joyful way to connect with the broader community while showcasing the Toastmasters experience.
The club now invites everyone to attend its upcoming Club Contest on March 11 and continue supporting this growing community.
What a powerful example of community engagement, cultural celebration, and leadership in action.
