Toastmasters Teams Up with the Calgary Hitmen

When you think of the Calgary Hitmen, you might picture fast-paced hockey, roaring fans, and the determination it takes to win on the ice. But this season, another kind of growth was happening behind the scenes — one that focused not on goals and assists, but on communication, confidence, and leadership.

Through a partnership between District 42 Toastmasters and the Calgary Hitmen, players participated in a Toastmasters Youth Leadership Program (YLP) designed to strengthen their speaking and leadership skills. Led by dedicated Toastmasters volunteers, the sessions gave the young athletes an opportunity to practice impromptu speaking, deliver short speeches and develop teamwork in a new setting. Hitmen management were thrilled to have us lead these sessions with the players.

The YLP helped the Hitmen players discover that leadership extends beyond the rink — it’s also about inspiring others through words and actions. The growth was visible: stronger introductions, more thoughtful organization, more effective use of gestures and increased vocal variety as well as a genuine camaraderie as teammates encouraged each other to improve.

For District 42 Toastmasters, this collaboration highlights the impact of communication training on young leaders in every walk of life. Thanks to the dedicated facilitators, Marshall Ennis, Russ Dantu, Matthew Fox, Marcy Field, Geetha N, Irma Goosen, and Christina Kruis. The Youth Leadership Program continues to open doors for students, athletes, and emerging professionals across Alberta and Saskatchewan — helping them find their voice and step forward with confidence.

Because whether it’s on the ice or behind a lectern, leadership begins with the courage to speak up.
