More Than a Destination
A Toastmasters journey of service, learning, leadership, and lifelong connections
Where the Journey Began
A trip is not about a destination but about the journey. I began my journey in my childhood home. My mother and father gave a helping hand to others and volunteered in several organizations. This was the first stop along the way.
The First Toastmasters Stop
Cathy Morrell invited me to my first Toastmasters meeting. Cathy and I became charter members for the Estevan Toastmasters Club. Alf Tide was president of the club. He had an amazing ability to add humour. Alf never missed a set-up or punchline. Bob Siroski provided interesting Table Topics. Bob could spin a tale and take your imagination soaring.
Inspired by Training and Warm Welcomes
When I attended my first training, I was inspired. Connie Paus, Bev Ward, Faye Andrusiak and Brad Korbo made the attendees feel welcome with a warm greeting. This team provided training that enhanced our skills as members of the executive and as Toastmasters. They demonstrated skills I wanted to learn.
Opportunities Along the Way
My journey in Toastmasters continued as I was offered opportunities. I had an opportunity to be an Area Director. What a wonderful way to meet other Toastmasters. The next opportunity was to be on the Division B Training Committee. Once again, I met amazing people. Following COVID, online meetings provided different opportunities. Distance does not matter when you meet online. I was interested in the Club Coach Program. I spent a few years on the Club Coach Committee. The next journey was the District 42 Training Committee.
Lessons from the Journey
Where did this journey take me? I worked to improve my leadership skills. I met amazing people. Some people flashed through the journey, and others have stayed for a lifetime. Each person provided insight into becoming a better person and a Toastmaster.
A Thank You to My Biggest Supporter
I want to thank my husband, Bernie. He has supported me throughout the journey. Sometimes the support came with a “take a break” and a stop sign.
Say Yes to the Opportunity
If you are offered an opportunity, please take it. Amazing people will cross your path. You will learn new skills and become a better person. The journey will take you to a variety of places and to a surprising destination.
