Building Tomorrow’s Leaders Today

Why Your Time Matters

Across our district, dedicated volunteers from Toastmasters International are making a lasting impact—one young voice at a time. Through the Youth Leadership Program (YLP), members of Toastmasters District 42 are helping students discover confidence, communication skills, and develop strong leadership skills.

The Youth Leadership Program in Action

Recently, a group of Grade 9 students completed a six-week YLP.  With the guidance of committed Toastmasters facilitators, they learned how to organize their thoughts, speak with purpose, and support one another. Their journey culminated in a speech contest in front of parents and peers—a powerful moment of growth and courage. Thanks to our Toastmaster volunteers, John Hallett, Wendie Swirski, Russ Dantu, Diane Fox, Marcy Field, Marshall Ennis, Jan Kruis, Sharon Spaargaren, Quinton Amundson, Monique Achtman and Christina Kruis, who supported these students throughout the program.

What the Students Had to Say

Most inspiring were the students’ reflections on what the volunteers meant to them:

  • “The Toastmasters made the experience amazing.”
  • “Every single lesson was wonderful, and all the guest speakers were superb!”
  • “The encouragement and smiles of other people in the meeting.”
  • “To be amongst such strong leaders.”
  • “I loved all the kind and wonderful people that I got to meet while doing this course!”
  • “Not only did they encourage me in many ways, but they have inspired me to live each day and speak each word intentionally.”

Encouragement That Changes Lives

These words remind us that our time, patience, and mentorship truly matter. For many students, this program was their first opportunity to speak publicly in a safe, supportive environment. Because of our volunteers, nervousness turned into pride, and hesitation into confidence.

Facilitating a Youth Leadership Program is more than teaching speeches—it is planting seeds for future leaders, communicators, and community builders. It strengthens our schools, our communities, and our own leadership skills as Toastmasters.

Why Your Involvement Matters

If you’ve ever wondered whether you could make a difference, these students have answered that question for you.

By getting involved in a YLP, you help shape young lives while growing as a leader yourself. Together, we can continue building confident voices and bright futures.

Let’s keep inspiring the next generation, one speech at a time.
