Lessons from the Frontlines

What This Year’s Speech Contests Taught Us

Another inspiring contest season has wrapped in District 42, offering more than just trophies. Whether you were a contestant, judge, timer, or enthusiastic audience member, there were valuable lessons for all of us as speakers, leaders, and communicators. Let’s take a look at our contest season and share a few observations to make next season even better.

What Went Well

  1. Clear Communication Boosted Confidence
Regular updates and briefings, including participation in the Circle of Gold, helped contestants feel supported and prepared, leading to more confident performances.
  2. Smooth Coordination with Officials
Reaching out to contest officials early, especially from clubs without contestants, made for a balanced and fair judging panel.
  3. Professional Video Production Elevated the Event
The video team delivered high-quality footage with enhanced lighting and quick turnarounds, capturing a professional showcase.
  4. Branded Backdrop Added Polish
A District 42-branded backdrop brought a professional feel and made for amazing photo ops!
  5. VIP Presence Made It Golden
Having Past International President Lark Doley present awards added prestige and excitement to the event.
  6. Well-Prepared Toastmasters Led the Way
Professionalism and punctuality from the contest Toastmasters helped everything run smoothly.

What We Can Improve

  1. Earlier Judges’ Training
More robust training with dates advertised early in the year will encourage more members to engage in contests as prepared officials.
  2. Specific Contest Training for Area and Division Directors
Precise direction on contest planning, execution and follow-up up including submission of thorough Notification of Winner forms promptly, will assist in smoother transitions moving toward the District.
  3. Faster Contestant Bio Submission
Delays in bios caused last-minute issues. Let’s set clearer deadlines.
  4. District Council Attendance at Conference
This would encourage more council members to attend the conference, thereby increasing the pool of judges and bringing more energy to the event.
  5. Secure Consistent Production Funding
This year’s stellar production proved the value of investing in video, lighting, and stage design. Let’s plan for it in the budget moving forward!

Looking Ahead: Let’s Aim Even Higher

This season reminded us what Toastmasters is all about—growth, connection, and celebrating each other’s voices. With continued teamwork and thoughtful planning, District 42 will continue to raise the bar in speech competition.
