Calgary Hitmen: Developing Tomorrow’s Leaders

One Play at a Time

What happens when Toastmasters step beyond the meeting room and into the community? Confidence grows, connections deepen, and leadership comes alive in powerful ways.

Recently, District 42 Toastmasters YLP Facilitators: Marshall Ennis, Russ Dantu, Matthew Fox, Marcy Field, Geetha N, Irma Goosen, and Christina Kruis had the opportunity for a night at a Calgary Hitmen hockey game. It was a heartfelt gesture of gratitude for the time, energy, and passion these members invested in helping young players strengthen their speaking and communication skills.

From the owner’s suite, facilitators enjoyed a thrilling 6–3 Hitmen victory. The real win was the camaraderie. Between plays, the conversation flowed easily. It was a reminder that service in Toastmasters isn’t just about giving back—it’s also about building meaningful relationships.

Youth Leadership programs offer Toastmasters a unique opportunity to make a lasting impact. By mentoring young people, members help them find their voice, build confidence, and develop leadership skills that will serve them for life. At the same time, facilitators sharpen their own communication, coaching, and leadership abilities—skills that translate directly back into club, area, and district roles.

Moments like this hockey night, highlight an important truth: when Toastmasters invest in youth, everyone benefits. The youth gain skills and encouragement. Members grow as leaders. And our communities become stronger.

If you’ve ever considered getting involved with Youth Leadership, this is your invitation. Whether you facilitate a program, support a session, or help start something new, your experience can make a real difference. And along the way, you just might find yourself building friendships—and memories—that last well beyond the final buzzer.

Step beyond the lectern. Invest in youth. Experience leadership in action.
